I got a MRI brain scan today!      Thursday, July 19, 2007 - 8:12 AM

I had a brain MRI today at 11am.  The ear, nose and throat doctor Shipley had sent me to get it done to make sure I have no tumors or anything like that before possibly having surgery in my ear.  I have had a severe hearing loss for over a year now and in the last 2 months I have heard the sound of my own heartbeat in my ear 24/7.  It is very loud and very concerning.  They called it Pulsatile Tinnitus and wanted to rule out a tumor as the cause.  They said that my hearing loss is most likely 1 of the 3 inner ear bones (the Stapes, Incus or Malleus) have fused shut and hinder the sound waves from going through the canal back into my brain.  My hearing through the bone is fine but through the ear is poor so they know from this it is a problem with one of those bones.

Mom had this same problem when she was just a bit younger than I am now.  She had a Stependectomy in both of her ears to replace the stapes bones.  She went completely deaf during her ordeal.  Upon hearing that, the doctor said it is probably the same bone seeing as it can be a genetic condition.  The surgical consult that will be scheduled after the MRI results are looked at will determine which of the bones I need to replace.  It wasn’t so bad.  I was nervous about trying to remain perfectly still but it was not bad at all.  They even gave me little earphones to listen to the radio while the scan was being done.  They didn’t really think that out too clearly seeing as they had the volume on it so low I couldn’t hear it but by then I was inside the machine and couldn’t tell them I couldn’t hear it and couldn’t move to take the earphones off.  Oh well, no biggie!  The scan took about 30-40 minutes.
